MAI served as a lead evaluator researching The Wallace Foundation’s multi-year Youth Arts Initiative, a comprehensive effort aimed at improving and expanding high-quality arts learning opportunities for young people, particularly within multi-service youth-serving organizations like Boys & Girls Clubs. In this role, MAI led studies that generated critical field knowledge by examining:
- The practical implementation of high-quality arts programming within multi-service, drop in, out-of-school time settings.
- How these programs effectively fostered youth engagement and retention, particularly among tweens.
- The development of specific artistic skills alongside broader youth development outcomes, including increased discipline, drive, confidence, and social competence among participants.
- The practical considerations and promising practices for implementing and sustaining quality afterschool arts programs, including the critical role of professional teaching artists and dedicated spaces.
This work culminated in three public reports, a brief, and numerous presentations directly informed BGCA’s continuous improvement efforts and contributed valuable insights to strengthen field practice in youth arts.
