The Change Leadership Initiative (CLI) Storytelling Study was a project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and conducted by MAI from 2022 to 2024 as a Portfolio Review and Assessment. The initiative’s core mission was to develop a diverse set of leaders, through programs such as Clinical Scholars, Interdisciplinary Research Leaders, Culture of Health Leaders, and Health Policy Research Scholars, to advance a national Culture of Health and health equity in the United States.
MAI’s role involved conducting a large-scale qualitative study of over 130 individuals who were either currently or previously involved with the CLI and its four Change Leadership Programs. The objective was to learn how the implementation of the CLI unfolded. MAI shared the findings with the Foundation, Program leadership, and study participants.
The study resulted in the Storytelling Project, which identified seven high-level dynamic tensions that RWJF and its partners encountered during the CLI’s implementation. These findings are intended to inform future leadership development efforts by funders, highlighting areas such as setting goals, defining leadership, valuing expertise, engaging alumni, negotiating authority, layering individual programs, and designing and resourcing support.
